The facelift is the most effective, transformative way to reduce signs of aging. With the expertise of a board-certified plastic surgeon, the facelift can remove as many as ten years from your facial profile.
The facelift, sometimes called rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that tightens the skin of the face and lifts the underlying tissues to a more upright, youthful position. One of the most common signs of aging in the face is the deepening of facial folds and sagging in the lower-and mid-face. Although there are many non-surgical alternatives available, the facelift is the most effective way to get rid of sagging skin and tissues.
The facelift can improve signs of aging in the face and neck including:
- Drooping in the center of the face
- Deep folds and wrinkles below the lower eyelids
- Deep lines alongside the nose and mouth, also called “parentheses” lines
- Sagging facial fat
- Fat that has disappeared, leaving hollows
- Skin tone loss in the jaw area that forms jowls
- A double chin, even if you aren’t overweight
In order to be considered a good candidate for a facelift, you should be in overall good health and have realistic expectations for what a facelift can achieve. It’s important to understand that a facelift cannot make you look like someone else –rather, it can make you look like a younger, more refreshed version of yourself.
The facelift can easily be combined with other facial plastic surgery procedures. Since the facelift mainly deals with the mid-face, it can be effectively combined with the brow lift, neck lift, or eyelid lift, for example. During your consultation with Dr. Trupiano, our board-certified plastic surgeon, you’ll discuss your concerns and create the right surgical plan for your goals.
A traditional facelift is typically performed using either general anesthesia or sedation. To begin, Dr. Trupiano will perform an incision near the temples, being conscious of your hairline. This incision allows the underlying muscles to be tightened, the fat to be repositioned, and loose skin to be excised. During your procedure, a neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid lift can also be performed. Once complete, the skin is re-draped over the underlying tissues and the incisions are closed with sutures. Then, you can return home.
You should plan to take 1-2 weeks away from work and regular activities. You may not feel comfortable returning to public for 2-3 weeks because of bruising and swelling. During your initial recovery, it’s important to keep your head elevated and take your prescribed medications according to instructions. You should also avoid elevating your heart rate and instead rest as much as possible. It can take a few months for all residual swelling to subside and up to six months for your final results to emerge. You can enjoy long-term results with a facelift if you maintain an effective skincare regimen and avoid sun damage.
