Every year, breast augmentation remains the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States. With the help of a board-certified plastic surgeon and one of America’s Top Breast Surgeons, you can enjoy a more balanced figure and newfound confidence.
What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure that enhances the size of the breasts with silicone or saline implants, fat transfer, or both. Breast augmentation with implants, also called breast implant surgery or augmentation mammaplasty, uses silicone- or saline-filled implants surgically placed in the breasts. Fat transfer breast augmentation (also called natural breast augmentation) uses fatty tissue grafted from elsewhere on the body that is injected into the breasts. In either case, the goal of breast augmentation is to enhance the size, shape, projection, and symmetry of the breasts.
Is Breast Augmentation Right for Me?
Breast augmentation is one of the best options available for patients looking to improve:
- The size and look of the breasts
- Self-confidence both in and out of clothes
- The fit and look of clothing (including bras)
- Their overall figure
- Symmetry in noticeably asymmetrical breasts
- The size of the breasts after weight loss
Breast implant surgery and natural breast augmentation are also popular choices for part of a mommy makeover procedure because they can help restore lost volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
In order to be considered a good candidate for breast augmentation, you should be in overall good health and have realistic expectations for what it can achieve. If you have plans to become pregnant in the future or are prone to having weight fluctuations, it’s best to discuss your goals in-depth during your consultation with Dr. Trupiano.

Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast implant surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. To begin, Dr. Trupiano will create a predetermined incision using one of the following patterns:
- Inframammary (under the breast crease)
- Periareolar (around the areola)
- Transaxillary (within the armpit)
Once an incision has been made, a pocket is created in the breast tissue. The implant is placed inside the pocket (either on top of or underneath the pectoral muscle) and the incisions are closed.
Breast Augmentation Results and Recovery
Breast surgery usually requires 1-2 weeks away from work, depending on the nature of your job. During this time, it’s normal to experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising at the surgical site. You’ll be given a specialized surgical bra to wear as much as possible to support your new implants and alleviate the swelling. You’ll also be given a prescription for pain medications, and it’s important to take these according to instructions so you can rest.
Make sure to avoid any extensive activity and return to your regular activities only when indicated by Dr. Trupiano. It can take a few months for most swelling to subside and up to one year for your implants to settle into their final position, but you can enjoy long-term results with breast implant surgery.
Natural breast augmentation requires substantially less recovery, but it’s still important to wear your compression garments and avoid heavy activity for at least two weeks. Since fat transfer breast augmentation is less invasive, you’ll experience less swelling and discomfort – but you should still focus on resting. Natural breast augmentation can also achieve long-term results with the right lifestyle.
