John Trupiano, MD

Every year, breast augmentation surgery, more commonly known as a “boob job” remains the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States. With the help of a board-certified plastic surgeon and one of America’s Top Breast Surgeons, you can enjoy a more balanced figure and newfound confidence with breast implants.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure that enhances the size of the breasts with silicone implants, saline implants, or gummy bear implants. Breast augmentation with traditional implants, also called breast implant surgery or augmentation mammoplasty, uses silicone- or saline-filled implants surgically placed in the breasts. The goal of breast augmentation is to enhance the breast size, shape, symmetry, and breast volume.

Is Breast Augmentation Right for Me?

Breast augmentation is one of the best options available for patients looking to improve:

  • The size and shape of your breasts
  • Self-confidence both in and out of clothes
  • The fit and look of clothing around the breast area (including bras)
  • Small or sagging breasts after breast feeding (when paired with a breast lift)
  • Symmetry for noticeably asymmetrical breasts
  • The size of the breasts after weight gain or significant weight loss

Breast implants and natural breast augmentation are also popular choices for part of a mommy makeover procedure because they can help restore lost volume and smooth out various textured surfaces after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Breast augmentation surgery is often combined with other surgeries such as a breast lift to correct sagging breasts.

In order to be considered a good candidate for breast augmentations, you should be in overall good health to avoid any possible complications, and you should also have realistic expectations for what a breast implant procedure can achieve. If you have plans to become pregnant in the future or are prone to having weight fluctuations, it’s best to discuss your goals in-depth during your consultation with Dr. Trupiano. For patient safety, you should follow your surgeon’s instructions for pre and post-surgical procedure care. Any pain medication being utilized during your breast augmentation surgery process should be approved by Dr. Trupiano.

Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast implant surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. To begin, Dr. Trupiano will create a predetermined incision using one of the following patterns:

  • Inframammary (under the breast crease)
  • Periareolar (around the areola)
  • Transaxillary (within the armpit)

Once an incision has been made, a pocket is created in the breast tissue. The implant is placed inside the pocket (either on top of or underneath the pectoral muscle) and the incisions are closed. Dr. Trupiano will work carefully to ensure the scar tissue around the incision site is minimal.

Breast Augmentation Results and Recovery

Breast augmentation surgery usually requires 1-2 weeks away from work, depending on the nature of your job– chest pain is common, and pushing yourself too much too soon could result in implant rupture. During this time, it’s normal for the chest muscle to experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising at the surgical site. You’ll be given a specialized surgical bra to wear as much as possible to support your new implants and alleviate the swelling, and later in the recovery process, you may opt to wear a sports bra instead. You’ll also be given a prescription for pain medications, and it’s important to take these according to instructions so you can rest and minimize any breast pain.

Whether you choose saline or silicone breast implants, all types of breast implants should heal the same, and sterile salt water can help ensure the cleanliness of your surgical tape. Make sure to avoid any extensive activity and return to your regular activities only when indicated by Dr. Trupiano. It can take a few months for most swelling to subside and up to one year for your implants to settle into their final position, but you can enjoy long-term results with breast implant surgery.

Natural breast augmentation requires substantially less recovery, but it’s still important to wear your compression garments and avoid heavy activity for at least two weeks. Since fat transfer breast augmentation is less invasive, you’ll experience less swelling and discomfort – but you should still focus on resting. Natural breast augmentation can also achieve long-term results with the right lifestyle.
