Even with the most dedicated diet and exercise, it’s normal to have stubborn areas where your body stores fat. Liposuction is one of the most effective ways to get rid of unwanted fat and consistently remains one of the top five plastic surgery procedures performed each year.
Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that permanently removes fat. It works by making a small incision and breaking up fatty tissue with a cannula, or blunt tube. The fat is then suctioned out with a surgical vacuum. It’s most commonly performed on the following areas of the body where fat typically accumulates:
- Upper arms
- Bra area
Liposuction can be included in a mommy makeover procedure, and it’s also commonly performed on people who lose significant weight. It can easily be combined with other procedures like the tummy tuck, thigh lift, arm lift, or breast reduction.
It’s normal for your body to accumulate fat in different areas because of weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and heredity. It’s impossible to spot-reduce fat in certain areas through traditional diet and exercise, meaning liposuction is the best way to contour your body and achieve a slimmer, more toned body. It’s important to know that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, and you should be at a healthy and stable weight before considering it. If you still have plans to lose weight, make sure to discuss your goals with Dr. Trupiano to determine the right time for your procedure. Liposuction can’t correct loose skin, so you may need to explore alternative options if you have skin laxity.
During your quick procedure, you’ll be medicated with local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. Small, inconspicuous incisions will be made around the target areas. Excess fat will be loosened and suctioned out of the body with a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula. Overall, liposuction can take 1-2 hours and you can return home immediately afterward.
You can expect to recover for about one week after surgery, during which you’ll experience some swelling, soreness, and fluid retention. Make sure to take your prescribed medications according to instructions so you can rest. You’ll be given a specialized compression garment to wear during this time to manage to swell, reduce fluid buildup, and help the skin adhere to the new contours. Make sure to wear your compression garment as much as possible for the first few weeks. You should also avoid extensive activity or an elevated heart rate during this time. Once the swelling reduces, you’ll notice your new and improved body contour. Though it’s natural to notice some loss of firmness as you age, the results will be long-lasting. For the best results, it’s important to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
