Gynecomastia is a condition that affects men of all ages. Adolescent gynecomastia, steroid-induced gynecomastia, pseudogynecomastia, and adult or age-related gynecomastia are all different subtypes of this condition. We will be discussing adult gynecomastia and how it relates to other aging factors in men.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a medical condition that causes the abnormal growth of excess breast tissue in men. This condition is often misunderstood as a sign of weight gain, but obesity and fat buildup is only a partial factor (if one at all) in the development of gynecomastia. However, for men over the age of 50, weight gain and skin laxity can have an impact on the severity of their gynecomastia.

What Causes Gynecomastia in Older Men?

Gynecomastia in older men is often caused by a hormonal imbalance. Low-T (low testosterone) is a common condition that men over 50 cope with. When less testosterone is being produced, a higher level of estrogen (the “female hormone”) is present in the body which can stimulate the growth of glandular breast tissue.

How is Gynecomastia Different for Older Men?

Many body factors are impacted by aging and another that contributes to gynecomastia in older men is skin laxity. As we age, the skin loses laxity or flexibility because collagen production slows down. As the skin becomes less flexible, it is unable to retract back which causes sagginess, skin folds, and wrinkling. Skin folds and loose skin contribute to the appearance of enlarged breasts and often make a full chest visible even when a shirt is being worn.

How is Gynecomastia in Older Men Treated?

Gynecomastia is typically treated with a combination of excision to remove the glandular tissue and excess skin and liposuction to remove fat deposits and sculpt the chest. Older men often have loose skin and more fat buildup which will be taken into careful consideration by Dr. Trupiano when determining the best technique for your male breast reduction.

Younger patients in their 20s may require less skin removal because the skin is still flexible and will retract back after surgery. For older patients, loose skin that has been stretched by breast tissue buildup will likely be loose after surgery. Dr. Trupiano will address that potential issue and make sure you achieve a flattened, masculine chest.
