Gynecomastia Or Chest Fat? – Troy MI

Do I Have Gynecomastia or Chest Fat?

By Dr. John Trupiano, board-certified plastic surgeon in Troy, Michigan

Many men in Troy MI, Birmingham MI, Rochester MI, and throughout Metro Detroit wonder whether they have gynecomastia or chest fat. The two can look similar, but they are not the same problem.

True gynecomastia occurs when firm gland tissue develops beneath the nipple. Chest fat, sometimes called pseudogynecomastia, is soft fatty tissue without a firm glandular component. Many men have a combination of both.

Why an examination matters

Even thin men can develop gynecomastia. Likewise, men who are overweight may have both fat and gland tissue.

Weight loss can improve chest fullness caused by fat, but true gland tissue usually does not disappear with diet or exercise. This is why some men remain bothered by their chest even after getting into better shape.

During a consultation at Trupiano Plastic Surgery in Troy, I evaluate the amount of gland tissue, fat, skin excess, and overall chest contour. Occasionally, ultrasound or laboratory testing may be helpful if the diagnosis is unclear.

Treatment depends on the cause

If the fullness is mostly fat, liposuction may be enough. If there is firm gland tissue behind the nipple, gland removal is usually needed. If there is loose skin, skin tightening may also be part of the plan.

The goal is not simply to make the chest flat. The goal is to create a natural masculine contour that fits your body. VIEW OUR GYNECOMASTIA GALLERY

Key takeaway

The only way to know whether you have gynecomastia or chest fat is through an examination. Once we know what is causing the fullness, we can choose the right treatment plan.

If you are bothered by chest fullness, puffy nipples, or gynecomastia, schedule a consultation with Trupiano Plastic Surgery in Troy, Michigan. An examination can determine whether the fullness is fat, gland tissue, loose skin, or a combination.
