What Is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, medically called a lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that targets lax muscles and excess skin and fat on the neck that contributes to an aged appearance. Many people seek a neck lift to redefine and tighten the contours of the chin and neck.

A neck lift can repair:

  • Jowls, or sagging skin and fat under the chin
  • Neck bands
  • Double chin or “turkey neck”

Some questions that would be helpful to ask during your consultation are:

  • How will my results look or change over time?
  • How long can I expect to dedicate to surgery and recovery?
  • Is a neck lift alone enough to achieve my goals?
  • What do I need to be prepared for recovery and what should I know about my expected recovery?
  • How do you handle complications?
  • What happens if I’m unhappy with my results?
  • Will I need any subsequent surgeries or procedures to maintain my results?

The questions you ask Dr. Trupiano will be unique to your personal goals. During your consultation, you will feel the personal attention and commitment to excellent care and ethical responsibility at the center of Dr. Trupiano’s philosophy.

Neck Lift Procedure Overview

On the day of your neck lift, you will arrive at your surgery location and be welcomed by friendly, highly trained staff who will help prepare you for surgery. Dr. Trupiano will review your treatment plan, mark your neck for surgery, and give you time to ask any last-minute questions. You will then meet with your board-certified anesthesiologist. A neck lift is performed under general anesthesia.

Once you are fully sedated, Dr. Trupiano will make well-concealed incisions near the hairline or underneath the chin. Once he has access to the underlying tissue, he will tighten lax muscles, remove or reposition excess fat, and remove excess skin. If you are also getting chin liposuction, he will make an incision under the chin. Once your neck is recontoured, he will re-drape your skin and close your incisions with sutures.

Dr. Trupiano will fit you with a compression garment to support your new neck contours and alleviate some of the pressure on your sutures. You will need to wear your compression garment until you are cleared to remove it to ensure optimal results and healing. Depending on your unique surgical plan, neck lift surgery can take between 2 and 4 hours.

What to Expect from Your Birmingham, MI Neck Lift Recovery

Your immediate neck lift recovery will take place at the surgical center in a comfortable recovery room where you will wake up from anesthesia and have time to get dressed. As an outpatient procedure, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Before you are discharged, a member of the team will review your post-operative care instructions with you and the person you have chosen to drive you home.

Dr. Trupiano recommends taking 1 to 2 weeks off work and normal activities to rest. Many patients take 2 to 3 weeks of social downtime while the swelling and bruising subsides. During recovery, you may experience pain, swelling, discomfort, and bruising at the surgical sites, but you will be able to manage pain with prescription and over-the-counter pain medication.

Tips For a Smooth Neck Lift Recovery

  • Keep your head and neck elevated, and make sure to keep your heart rate down while you heal.
  • As soon as you are able, light walking can help increase blood flow to your surgical site and promote healing.
  • Do not shower until after the first 36 to 48 hours following your surgery. You should shower daily thereafter.
  • Good nutrition and hydration are the keys to healing. Eat well-balanced meals high in protein and healthy fats, and keep yourself hydrated.
  • Make sure you and a trusted adult understand the post-surgical instructions, including appropriate sleeping positions, bathing instructions, and wound and drain care.
  • Wear your compression garments at all times, except when bathing or laundering, for the first several weeks to support your new neck contours.
  • Schedule your necessary follow-up appointments and have the office phone number accessible to call Dr. Trupiano if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Avoid engaging in strenuous activities, exercising, or lifting anything above 10 pounds until you are cleared by Dr. Trupiano.
