What Is a Facelift?
A facelift, medically called a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure to treat or reverse the signs of aging in the mid to lower face. During the procedure, Dr. Trupiano removes excess skin, fat, and tissues from the lower face and neck before tightening the connective tissue layer, or SMAS, that supports the lower face structure.
A facelift can treat or reverse:
- Deep wrinkles or folds below the eyes
- Deep wrinkles or lines around the nose and mouth, called “parentheses lines”
- Sagging or drooping facial fat or skin
- Facial volume loss creating hollows
- Jowls
- Double chin

Your Facelift Consultation
On the day of your individualized facelift consultation, you should bring your completed patient intake forms. When you get to the office, you will meet with Dr. Trupiano for a one-on-one consultation where you can reveal your concerns and express what you want to change about your body and why. Dr. Trupiano will then perform a physical examination, explain what he feels can be accomplished, and create a comprehensive treatment plan that honors your goals, values, and natural beauty.
Patient education is one of the cornerstones of Trupiano Plastic Surgery’s practice philosophy. During your consultation, Dr. Trupiano will take ample time to ensure you have realistic expectations of what your facelift can accomplish and are fully aware of what will happen, how it works, and the surgical risks and benefits.

Facelift Procedure Overview
On the day of your facelift surgery in Detroit, you will arrive at your surgery location and be welcomed by friendly, highly trained staff who will help prepare you for surgery. Dr. Trupiano will review your treatment plan, mark your face for surgery, and give you time to ask any last-minute questions. You will then meet with your board-certified anesthesiologist. A facelift is performed using either general anesthesia or sedation.
Once you are fully sedated, Dr. Trupiano will make discreet incisions in the hairline and around the temples. Depending on your surgical plan, the incision may continue around the ear and into the lower scalp or under the chin. Once he has access to the underlying tissue, fat, and muscle, Dr. Trupiano will lift and tighten the muscles to address facial sagging, remove or reposition fat, and remove excess skin. Once the tissue is resculpted, Dr. Trupiano will re-drape the skin and close the incisions with sutures.
If indicated in your surgical plan, Dr. Trupiano will also perform complementary procedures like a neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid lift at this time. Depending on your unique surgical plan, facelift surgery can take between 2 and 6 hours.
What to Expect from Your Birmingham, MI Facelift Recovery
Because this is an outpatient procedure, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Your facelift recovery in Birmingham, MI will begin at the surgical center in a comfortable recovery room where you will wake up from anesthesia and have time to get dressed. Before you are discharged, a member of the team will review your post-operative care instructions with you and the person you have chosen to drive you home.
When you wake up from surgery, your head will be bandaged, and Dr. Trupiano will fit you with a compression garment to ease pressure on the incisions and support your new facial contours. If necessary, he will place drainage tubes that will be removed at your follow-up visit.
Dr. Trupiano recommends taking 1 to 2 weeks off work and normal activities to rest. Many people take 2 to 3 weeks of social downtime because of the bruising and swelling. During this time, you may experience pain, swelling, discomfort, and bruising at the surgical sites, and you will be able to manage pain with prescription and over-the-counter pain medication.
Tips For a Smooth Tummy Tuck Recovery
- Keep your head elevated and take your prescription pain medication as directed.
- As soon as you are able, light walking can help increase blood flow to your surgical site and promote healing.
- Do not shower until after the first 36 to 48 hours following your surgery. You should shower daily thereafter.
- Good nutrition and hydration are the keys to healing. Eat well-balanced meals high in protein and healthy fats, and make sure you keep yourself hydrated.
- Make sure you and a trusted adult understand the post-surgical instructions, including appropriate sleeping positions, bathing instructions, and wound and drain care.
- Wear your compression garment at all times, except when bathing or laundering, for the first several weeks to support your new facial contours.
- Schedule your necessary follow-up appointments and have the office phone number accessible to call Dr. Trupiano if you have any questions or concerns.
- Avoid engaging in strenuous activities until you are cleared by Dr. Trupiano.
When Will I See My Detroit Facelift Results?
Swelling after a facelift can take several months to subside, and it could take up to six months to see your final results. A facelift sets back the clock on the signs of aging, but with good skincare and sun protection, you can expect your facelift results to last 7 to 10 years.
It is important to note that while a facelift can make you look younger, it cannot stop aging. The rest of your face will continue to age, likely at the same rate, so talk to Dr. Trupiano about a comprehensive treatment plan.
Continuity of care and patient satisfaction are at the heart of Trupiano Plastic Surgery. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, please call Dr. Trupiano at (248) 220-3310.

Yes. While non-surgical treatments cannot replicate facelift results, options like:
- Botox® and dermal fillers for wrinkle reduction and volume restoration.
- Laser skin resurfacing to improve skin tone and texture.
- Ultrasound or radiofrequency treatments for mild skin tightening.
These are best for patients with early signs of aging.
- A liquid facelift uses dermal fillers and Botox to temporarily smooth wrinkles and restore volume.
- A traditional facelift surgically removes excess skin and tightens facial muscles, providing more dramatic and long-lasting results.
To maximize the longevity of your facelift (which can last 7–10 years):
- Follow a good skincare routine, including sun protection.
- Maintain a stable weight to prevent skin stretching.
- Stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet.
- Consider non-surgical treatments like Botox or fillers for maintenance.
Most patients feel comfortable going out in public within 2–3 weeks, once swelling and bruising have subsided.
- Light walking is encouraged as soon as possible.
- Avoid strenuous exercise for at least six weeks to allow full healing.
- Follow Dr. Trupiano’s recommendations for safe activity progression.
Most patients take 1–2 weeks off work, but social downtime may extend to 2–3 weeks if swelling and bruising are still visible.
Patients must quit smoking at least four weeks before and after surgery because smoking:
- Impairs healing by restricting blood flow.
- Increases the risk of complications such as poor wound healing and infection.
- Negatively affects long-term results by accelerating skin aging.
While facelifts are safe when performed by an experienced surgeon, potential risks include:
- Swelling, bruising, or prolonged numbness.
- Scarring, which is typically minimal and hidden.
- Hematoma (blood accumulation under the skin).
- Temporary or permanent nerve injury (rare).
- Infection or delayed healing, particularly for smokers.
Dr. Trupiano will discuss all risks during your consultation and ensure proper post-op care to minimize complications.
