What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, medically known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to repair separated or weakened abdominal muscles and remove excess fat and skin from the midsection to give patients a flatter, more toned figure. For some people, diet and exercise alone are not enough to tone and sculpt the midsection. A tummy tuck can help give you the results you want for a body you’ll love.

It is important to note that a tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure but is instead a body contouring procedure. A tummy tuck can:

  • Restore a protruding stomach
  • Tighten and restore separated or weakened abdominal muscles
  • Remove excess skin or fat after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Restore your abdominal appearance after changes from aging, genetics, or previous surgery

Your Tummy Tuck Consultation

On the day of your individualized consultation, you should bring your completed patient intake forms with you. When you get to the office, you will meet with Dr. Trupiano for a one-on-one consultation where you can reveal your concerns and express what you want to change your abdominal appearance and why. Dr. Trupiano will then perform a physical examination, explain what he feels can be accomplished, and create a comprehensive treatment plan that honors your goals, values, and natural beauty.

Patient education is one of the cornerstones of Trupiano Plastic Surgery’s practice philosophy. During your consultation, Dr. Trupiano will take ample time to ensure you have realistic expectations of the procedure and are fully aware of what will happen, how it works, and what the surgical risks and benefits are.

Informed consent is an integral part of ethical patient care. As such, Dr. Trupiano encourages patients to come to their consultations having already researched their procedure, being able to articulate their goals, having a realistic understanding of the costs, and asking informed questions.

Some questions that would be helpful to ask during your tummy tuck consultation are:

  • How do your patients feel about their tummy tuck results?
  • How long can I expect recovery to take?
  • Do you think that my goals are anatomically achievable?
  • What happens if my family planning changes?
  • Will I have visible scars?
  • How long can I expect my results to last?
  • How long after weight loss or pregnancy should I wait to get a tummy tuck?

Because a tummy tuck is a highly individualized procedure, your questions will likely be unique to your personal circumstances. During your consultation, you will feel the personal attention and commitment to excellent care and ethical responsibility. At Trupiano Plastic Surgery, you will always feel supported and welcomed from the moment you schedule your consultation to long after your treatment is complete.

Tummy Tuck Procedure Overview

On the day of your tummy tuck procedure, you will arrive at your surgery location and be welcomed by friendly, highly trained staff who will help prepare you for surgery. Dr. Trupiano will review the treatment plan, mark your abdomen for surgery, and give you time to ask any last-minute questions. You will then meet with your board-certified anesthesiologist. A tummy tuck can be performed using general anesthesia or sedation, depending on what you and Dr. Trupiano determine during your consultation.

Once you are sedated, Dr. Trupiano will make an incision that runs from your hip, down to the pubic hairline, and up to your opposite hip. The exact shape of the incision depends on how much excess skin is in this area, but Dr. Trupiano takes every measure to ensure that your scar will be easily covered by underwear or a swimsuit.

After making the appropriate incision, Dr. Trupiano pulls back the flap of skin to repair your abdominal muscles. Depending on whether you are having a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck, he may make another incision around the belly button to remove excess skin from the upper abdominal area.

After your abdominal muscles are repaired, your Detroit plastic surgeon will pull your upper abdominal skin taut and trim away any excess skin at the bottom. Then, he will suture the bottom of the flap with the adjoining skin. If necessary, Dr. Trupiano will reposition and restore the belly button to make sure it looks natural and is in an attractive location. Finally, your last sutures will be placed, and you will be ready to start the recovery process.

What to Expect from Your Birmingham, MI Tummy Tuck Recovery

As a tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. Your immediate recovery will take place at the surgical center in a comfortable recovery room. After adequate time to wake up from anesthesia, usually about an hour and a half, you will have time to get dressed. Before you are discharged, a member of the team will review your post-operative care instructions with you and the person you have chosen to drive you home.

Dr. Trupiano recommends taking 1 to 2 weeks off work and normal activities to rest. During this time, you should expect swelling and discomfort, but this can be managed with prescription medication and ice.

Tips For a Smooth Tummy Tuck Recovery

  • As soon as you are able, light walking can help increase blood flow to your surgical site and promote healing.
  • Do not shower until after the first 36 to 48 hours following your surgery. You should shower daily thereafter.
  • Good nutrition and hydration are the keys to healing. Eat well-balanced meals high in protein and healthy fats, and make sure you keep yourself hydrated.
  • Make sure you and a trusted adult understand the post-surgical instructions, including appropriate sleeping positions, bathing instructions, and wound and drain care.
  • Wear your compression garment at all times, except when bathing or laundering, for the first several weeks to support your new contours.
  • Schedule your necessary follow-up appointments and have the office phone number accessible so you can call Dr. Trupiano if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Avoid engaging in strenuous activities, exercising, or lifting anything above 10 pounds until you are cleared by Dr. Trupiano.

Continuity of care and patient satisfaction are at the heart of Trupiano Plastic Surgery. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, please call Dr. Trupiano at (248) 220-3310.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

Stomach cramps after a tummy tuck are common but these will resolve. A tummy tuck does not cause any long-term stomach issues.

A scar does form after the tummy tuck procedure but it’s typically very thin and can usually be hidden below your underwear.

The results of a tummy tuck can last for years if not decades. How long they last typically depends on the natural aging process, any fluctuations in your weight you experience, and how well you stick to a healthy lifestyle.

Some of the side effects that may come with a tummy tuck include bruising, redness, swelling, and scarring.

When you can start working out differs for each patient but generally, it’s recommended you wait approximately 6 weeks before you start working out. And you should start off slowly to build up your strength.

A good candidate for a tummy tuck is anyone who is at a stable weight, has realistic expectations, is a nonsmoker, and has issues with the appearance of their abdomen. Those with separated abdominal muscles are also good candidates for the procedure as well.

Before your consultation, you should:

  • Research the procedure and haverealistic expectations.
  • Be at a stable weight for at least six months. A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure but rather a body contouring surgery.
  • Prepare questions about results, scarring, recovery, and long-term expectations.
  • Complete necessary medical tests like routine bloodwork if required.

No, a tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure. It removes excess skin and fat and repairs abdominal muscles, but it is best suited for individuals who have already lost weight or are at their goal weight.

  • You will arrive at the surgical center and meet with Dr. Trupiano to review the treatment plan.
  • Anesthesia will be administered (general anesthesia or sedation).
  • Dr. Trupiano will make an incision along the hip-to-hip area, repair abdominal muscles, remove excess skin, and reposition the belly button if needed.
  • The procedure typically lasts 2-4 hours, and you will be monitored in a recovery room before going home with post-op instructions.
  • A smooth, natural abdominal contour without bulging or irregularities.
  • A well-positioned, natural-looking belly button (not too high or too low).
  • A low, well-hidden scar that sits below the bikini line.

A tummy tuck tightens underlying abdominal muscles, which may create a more sculpted look. However, visible definition depends on your body composition and muscle tone before surgery.

Yes, in most full tummy tucks, Dr. Trupiano repositions and reshapes the belly button to ensure it looks natural and aesthetically pleasing.

Yes, surgical drains are commonly used to prevent fluid buildup. Drains are typically removed within 1-2 weeks, depending on your healing process.

Not always. Muscle repair (diastasis recti correction) is performed when the abdominal muscles are stretched or separated, usually after pregnancy or significant weight fluctuations.

Results will vary for each patient, but generally, the tummy tuck procedure does make the stomach area flatter.

A full abdominoplasty will remove the excess skin from your abdomen and tighten all underlying abdominal muscles. A partial abdominoplasty will remove excess skin and tighten the lower abdominal muscles.

You must have a caregiver drive you home from surgery and take care of you for the evening.

Patients may lose two to three pant sizes after their tummy tuck procedure. This varies based on each patient and how much excess skin they have removed.

It is best to be relatively close to your desired weight for six to twelve months before your tummy tuck. You should be within 15 pounds of your goal weight.

Insurance companies rarely cover tummy tuck procedures since they are generally elective and not medically required.

Swelling is most noticeable in the first few weeks but can take up to six months to fully resolve.

Yes, pregnancy is possible, but it may affect or reverse your results. If you plan on having more children, it’s recommended to wait until after childbirth for a tummy tuck.

Yes, many patients combine a tummy tuck with liposuction or other body contouring procedures for comprehensive results.

  • Light walking is encouraged as soon as possible.
  • Strenuous exercise and lifting should be avoided for at least six weeks.
  • Full clearance for intense workouts varies based on healing.

Lifting anything over 10 pounds should be avoided for at least 6 weeks to protect your abdominal repair and healing process.

Tightness is normal due to muscle repair and skin removal. Light movement is encouraged, but strenuous activity should be avoided until cleared by Dr. Trupiano.
