What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction, medically known as lipoplasty, is a minimally invasive body contouring procedure that removes pockets of unwanted fat resistant to diet and exercise. While liposuction can permanently eliminate fat, it is not a weight loss procedure but is instead a body contouring procedure. Liposuction can permanently remove fat from:

  • Stomach
  • Upper arms
  • Double chin
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Flanks
  • Chest and bra area

What Is High-Definition Liposuction?

High-definition liposuction is an approach to liposuction that differs from the traditional method. Where liposuction is intended to remove fat, high-definition liposuction removes fat according to your underlying musculature and may include grafting fat back in at precise locations to truly sculpt the treatment area, creating an athletic, defined appearance. If you are looking for a chiseled physique, high-definition liposuction is what you want. This specialized liposculpture procedure can define your athletic contours in a way traditional liposuction cannot.

Liposuction Procedure Overview

On the day of your liposuction procedure, you will arrive at your surgery location and be welcomed by friendly, highly trained staff who will help prepare you for surgery. Dr. Trupiano will review the treatment plan, mark your body for surgery, and give you time to ask any last-minute questions. You will then meet with your board-certified anesthesiologist. Liposuction is generally performed using local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on what you and Dr. Trupiano determine during your consultation.

Liposuction incisions are small, and Dr. Trupiano takes great care to place the incisions in inconspicuous locations. Your incisions will be specific to the treatment location. Once Dr. Trupiano has made your liposuction incision, he will use a cannula, or a blunt tube, to break up the fatty tissue. He will then extract the fat with a surgical vacuum or a syringe attached to the cannula.

Once Dr. Trupiano is done, he will close the incisions with sutures, and you will be ready to start the recovery process. Generally, liposuction takes between 1 and 2 hours, and you will be able to go home immediately after your procedure unless you have chosen IV sedation or are having other procedures performed at the same time.

What to Expect from Your Birmingham, MI Liposuction Recovery

Your immediate liposuction recovery will take place at the surgical center in a comfortable recovery room. Before you are discharged, a member of our team will review your post-operative care instructions with you and the person you have chosen to drive you home.

Dr. Trupiano recommends taking at least one week off work and normal activities to rest. During this time, you should expect swelling, fluid retention, and discomfort, but this can be managed with prescription and over-the-counter medication. Before you go home, you will be given a compression garment to help manage the swelling and fluid retention while helping your skin adhere to your new contours. You will need to wear this compression garment as often as possible for the first few weeks of recovery.

Tips for a Smooth Liposuction Recovery

  • As soon as you are able, light walking can help increase blood flow to your surgical site and promote healing.
  • Do not shower for the first 36 to 48 hours following your surgery. You should shower daily thereafter.
  • Good nutrition and hydration are the keys to healing. Eat well-balanced meals high in protein and healthy fats, and make sure you keep yourself hydrated.
  • Make sure you and a trusted adult understand the post-surgical instructions, including appropriate sleeping positions, bathing instructions, and wound and drain care.
  • Wear your compression garment at all times, except when bathing or laundering, for the first several weeks to support your new contours.
  • Schedule your necessary follow-up appointments and have the office phone number accessible so you can call Dr. Trupiano if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Avoid engaging in strenuous activities until you are cleared by Dr. Trupiano.

Continuity of care and patient satisfaction are at the heart of Trupiano Plastic Surgery. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, please call Dr. Trupiano at (248) 220-3310.

Liposuction FAQs

Liposuction can be performed under general anesthesia which puts you to sleep or local anesthesia which will not put you to sleep. This depends on the size of the treatment area and your comfort level.

To ensure optimal healing and results, avoid:

  • Strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several weeks.
  • Smoking and alcohol can impair healing.
  • Salty, processed, and sugary foods contribute to swelling.
  • Skipping compression garments, as they reduce swelling and help contour the body.
  • Direct sun exposure on incisions to prevent scarring.

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells, but maintaining results requires a healthy lifestyle. Future weight gain can cause fat accumulation in other areas, so regular exercise and a balanced diet are essential.

No, liposuction does not cause fat to migrate. However, if you gain weight, remaining fat cells in untreated areas may enlarge, altering body proportions. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your results.

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and is intended to treat stubborn pockets of fat. Patients should be within 30 pounds of their weight goal before liposuction surgery.

Discomfort varies by individual, but most patients describe liposuction pain as mild to moderate. Soreness, swelling, and bruising are common in the first 1-2 weeks, but pain can be managed with prescribed and over-the-counter medications.

  • Sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated.
  • Avoid sleeping on treated areas to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • Use pillows for support to maintain a comfortable position.
  • Liposuction removes localized fat pockets but does not address loose skin or muscle separation.
  • A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes excess skin, tightens abdominal muscles, and reshapes the midsection.
Patients with loose skin or muscle separation after pregnancy or weight loss may benefit more from a tummy tuck or a combination of both procedures.
