What Is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, also called Brachioplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms. It uses incisions to tighten the skin of the arms and remove stubborn fat (sometimes with the help of liposuction). The goal is a more toned look and flattering fit to your favorite clothes.

Is an Arm Lift Right for Me?

An arm lift is a popular option for patients who have lost significant weight or who have recently undergone pregnancy. Some patients who opt for an arm lift simply have stubborn fat or stretched skin due to genetics. In order to be considered a good candidate for an arm lift, you should be in overall good health and have realistic expectations for what an arm lift can achieve. During recovery from an arm lift, you’ll be unable to lift objects or reach your arms above your head, so you may need to postpone your surgery if you’re unable to comply for a few weeks.

Your Arm Lift Procedure

An arm lift is typically performed using sedation or general anesthesia. There are two different incision patterns that will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Trupiano. These include inside the upper arm (underneath the bicep) or down the back of the upper arm (along the triceps). Once the incision is made, excess skin can be trimmed away, and stubborn fat can be removed. Once complete, your incisions will be closed, and you can return home.

Arm Lift Results and Recovery

The arm lift requires 1-2 weeks of downtime, during which you should avoid raising your arms above your head or lifting heavy objects. You can expect swelling and discomfort which can be managed with prescribed medications. You’ll be fitted with compression sleeves to wear in order to suppress swelling, prevent fluid buildup, and help the skin adhere to the new contours.

Make sure to wear your compression garments as much as possible for the first several weeks. Although you’ll have scarring from your incisions, it will fade over time and be easily concealable. After 1-2 months, you’ll enjoy noticeably slimmer, more toned upper arms that can last for the long term provided you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Arm Lift FAQs

Yes. Underarm surgery (brachioplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and sagging skin from under the arms.

Like all surgeries, your arm lift will leave a scar. However, your surgeon will try to make an incision on the inside of your arm where the scar can be easily concealed.
